The papers presented in this volume constitute a collection of contributions (the second, companion volume is: „Issues in Soft Computing: Decisions and Operations Research”, O. Hryniewicz, J. Kacprzyk and D. Kuchta (Eds.), EXIT, Warsaw, 2005), by both well-known experts and young researchers in various fields of broadly perceived soft computing. It may be viewed as a result of fruitful discussions held during the Fourth Warsaw International Seminar on Soft Computing (WISSC-04) organized in Warsaw in 2004 by the Systems Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences and Institute of Industrial Engineering and Management, Wroclaw University of Technology, in collaboration with the Warsaw School of Information Technology and endorsed by the Polish Society of Operations and Systems Research (PT-BOiS), Polish Neural Network Society (PTSN), EUNITE (European Network on Intelligent Technologies for Smart Adaptive Systems) and EUSFLAT (European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology).

The Fourth Warsaw International Seminar on Soft Computing, WISSC-4'04 was organized in memory of Professor Stefan Chanas on the second anniversary of his death (he died on 4th November 2002). This Seminar, as previous seminars in the series, was focused on: foundational and applica-tional issues of broadly perceived soft computing, including but not limited to, fuzzy sets, rough sets, evolutionary computations, neural networks, probabilistic reasoning, etc., and applications in the areas exemplified by: operation research, decision making and support, control, data analysis, data mining, signal processing, management, financial engineering, etc.

We hope that a collection of main contributions presented at the Workshop, completed with many papers by leading experts from all over the world who have not been able to participate, will provide a source of much needed information on recent trends in various domains of broadly perceived soft computing (contributions related to previous seminars (WISSC-1,2,3'03) have been published in two volumes: „Soft Computing: Foundations and Theoretical Aspects”, K. Atanassov, O. Hryniewicz and J. Kacprzyk (Eds.), EXIT, Warsaw, 2004, and „Soft Computing: Tools, Techniques and Applications”, P. Grzegorzewski, M. Krawczak and S.
