The 21st International Conference on “Informatics for Environmental Protection” is organized by: Systems Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland and Expert Committee 4.6 “Informatics in Environmental Protection” of the German Informatics Society (GI).

In the first volume we collected the papers on methods, tools, technologies, best practices and case studies. They are organized according to the conference topics: knowledge and information management ; systems analysis in environmental engineering and environmental informatics ; decision support information systems for optimization and control of environmental processes ; environmental engineering and environmental informatics with respect to health protection ; emergencies and disaster management ; e-society and environmental protection ; mathematical modeling and computer simulation methods and algorithms ; trends in environmental information and geographical information systems ; monitoring, transmission and visualization systems ; economical aspects related to environmental informatics ; application of environmental informatics: practical cases ; risk assessment and risk management ; presentation of software exhibits.

Apart from reviewed papers, in the first there is also a collection of invited papers by our plenary speakers. We would like to thank for their important input and valuable knowledge which they share during their lectures.

The second volume contains papers from several workshop accompanying the conference: which system do we mean? – the challenge to bridge multidisciplinary in environmental informatics ; environmental information for public ; EcoInforma Symposium: integrating information for health and environmental protection ; seamless access to environmental information in the EU – building an integrated information space for the environment ; visegrad workshop: the role of ICT in the process of development of eGovernment services in environment ; ranking methods with the emphasis on partially ordered sets ; integrated modeling of air pollution for Poland ; SEDINE-the mappings.
